Part 3: Emerging Giants – Brazil, India & Africa’s Massive Underground Markets
Share
While North America leads legal markets, populous nations with traditional use drive enormous total consumption. India, with its 1.4+ billion people and cultural history of bhang, has millions of users despite strict laws—estimates suggest 2.8-3% prevalence, translating to tens of millions. Traditional forms remain popular, and the illicit/growing medical scene is huge.
Brazil, South America’s most populous country (~210+ million), has seen steady growth to ~10 million recent users. Chile often tops per-capita lists in the region (~35%).
Africa shines on prevalence: Nigeria (~19%), Ghana (~21.5%), and others show strong traditional and recreational use across large populations, contributing heavily to global totals even without legal frameworks.
These markets prove cannabis consumption isn’t just a “Western legal” phenomenon—cultural roots and population scale create massive demand that laws struggle to contain.
