NJ Cannabis Data Hub: Dispensaries, Sales & Tax

NJ Culture Desk · Data HubLast updated October 5, 2026

Every number New Jersey smokers, reporters and town councils keep asking about, in one place: how many legal dispensaries are open, what the market sells, what Trenton collects in tax, which towns said yes to retail and what the Cannabis Regulatory Commission does next. Each figure links to its source and carries an “as of” date. We refresh it weekly.

NJ cannabis by the numbers

The quick read. Hard counts come from the CRC. Where we added CRC figures together, the card says “TSR sum.”

Two counts, two meanings. 327 is the number of adult-use storefronts on the CRC’s public finder map when we pulled it on October 5, 2026 (57 serve both medical and adult-use customers, 270 are adult-use only, and the map also lists 1 medical-only location; we removed one duplicate pin). 350 is the CRC’s own count of adult-use retailers licensed to operate on August 5, 2026. Licensed doesn’t always mean the doors are open yet.
Not yet published: CRC monthly sales after June 2026, and certified 2026 sales tax and SEEF totals. We’ll add them when the CRC posts them.

Third-party estimates, not CRC numbers: Headset’s retail point-of-sale panel puts July 2026 at $101.2M (Marijuana Herald) and August 2026 at $100.9M (Headset). Headset tracks a sample of stores, so its totals run lower than the CRC’s statewide Metrc counts. Don’t mix the two series.

Taxes and fees on NJ cannabis

Three layers hit a legal purchase: the state sales tax at the register, an optional municipal transfer tax, and the SEEF, a per-ounce fee cultivators pay at wholesale. From 2022 through 2025 the state collected $190.6M in adult-use sales tax and $18.3M in SEEF (TSR sum of CRC certified totals).

Dispensaries by county: all 21 counties

Hudson County has the most adult-use storefronts (35), led by Jersey City with 25. Measured by dollars, Camden County leads with 10.16% of statewide sales in June 2026. Dispensary counts are TSR’s tally of the CRC finder map by county. The sales share comes straight from CRC slides.

Where retail is allowed: municipal opt-ins

Every New Jersey town decides for itself. Of the state’s 564 municipalities, the CRC’s opt-in table lists 233 that allow at least one type of cannabis business and 176 that allow retail dispensaries (Class 5). That leaves 388 towns with no retail: 331 that aren’t on the opt-in list at all, plus 57 that allow other license types but not storefronts. In practice, 143 towns host at least one adult-use dispensary on the CRC map. 14 of those towns aren’t marked as allowing retail in the CRC table (5 of them host medical dispensaries that expanded into adult-use), so treat the table as a floor, not a final word.

FAQ

How many dispensaries are in New Jersey?

As of October 5, 2026, the CRC’s dispensary finder lists 327 locations that sell adult-use cannabis (57 also serve medical patients) and 1 medical-only location. The CRC counted 350 adult-use retailers licensed to operate on August 5, 2026.

How much legal cannabis does New Jersey sell?

Adult-use sales were $115.3M in June 2026 (CRC, uncertified) and $1.12B in 2025 (CRC, certified). Since sales began on April 21, 2022, the total through June 2026 is about $3.77B (TSR sum of CRC figures).

How much tax does New Jersey collect from cannabis?

In 2025 the state collected $67.5M in sales tax on adult-use cannabis and $11.0M in Social Equity Excise Fees (CRC certified). Retail sales carry the 6.625% state sales tax, and host towns can add a local transfer tax of up to 2% on dispensary receipts. Cultivators pay the SEEF, $2.50 per ounce in 2026.

Which New Jersey county has the most dispensaries?

Hudson County, with 35 adult-use dispensaries on the CRC finder (Jersey City alone has 25). Camden County had the largest share of statewide sales in June 2026 at 10.16%.

How many New Jersey towns allow dispensaries?

The CRC’s opt-in table lists 176 of New Jersey’s 564 municipalities as allowing retail dispensaries, so 388 do not. The CRC notes the table may be outdated.

Can you grow cannabis at home in New Jersey?

No. Growing cannabis at home is still illegal for adult-use consumers. Bills S2564 and A4576 would allow up to six plants per adult (12 per household), but both remain in committee as of October 5, 2026.

When is the next CRC meeting?

The CRC holds a special virtual meeting on Zoom on Monday, October 5, 2026 at 11 a.m. The next regular meeting is Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 11 a.m. at 200 Riverview Plaza in Trenton, followed by December 10.

Sources & methodology

TSR's compilation is licensed CC BY 4.0. Reuse with credit to The Stoner Review and a link to this page. Underlying figures come from the NJ CRC and NJ Treasury.

  • Dispensary counts: we pulled every location on the CRC’s public finder map on October 5, 2026 and counted those tagged or categorized as recreational (adult-use). We placed each one in a county with U.S. Census 2023 municipal boundary files. Delivery-only services are not counted.
  • Sales: yearly figures are the CRC’s certified quarterly totals. 2026 monthly figures are uncertified Metrc numbers from CRC meeting slides and can be revised. All-time and year-to-date totals are TSR sums of those CRC figures. They’re arithmetic, not estimates.
  • Tax: “state sales tax” is the CRC’s “Recreational Tax Revenue” column. The SEEF is the CRC’s “Social Equity Excise Fees” column. Rates come from NJ Treasury.
  • Data-quality calls on the dispensary count: the CRC map had 329 pins on October 5, 2026. We removed one duplicate (an untagged second pin for NJ Leaf Aberdeen at the same address and website). The map lists two different shops, Conservatory Cannabis Company and City Leaves, at 2516 Fire Rd in Egg Harbor Township; we count both, as the CRC lists them. Central Jersey Dispensary (2 John F. Kennedy Blvd, Somerset 08873) is counted in Somerset County (Franklin Township) by its street address, although its CRC map pin sits inside Jamesburg (Middlesex). Headline number: 327 operating on the map; the CRC’s 350 licensed-to-operate count is shown as a note because licensed doesn’t always mean open.
  • Third-party data (Headset) is labeled wherever it appears and kept out of the CRC tables.
  • Gaps: anything the CRC hasn’t published yet is marked “not yet published.” We don’t fill holes with guesses.
  • Refresh: the desk updates this page weekly. Spot an error? Use the contact page and we’ll fix it.
