Tracking data, not tax data. CRA’s sales figures come from the state’s seed-to-sale tracking system and are reported by month. They are not tax collections. CRA’s running “sales to date” total can differ slightly from the sum of its monthly totals because earlier months get revised.
Not published by CRA: sales by city, county or store, and a downloadable list of open stores with addresses. CRA reports sales for five broad regions only. Store counts by county below come from Treasury’s revenue-sharing report.

Where the stores are: 860 retail licenses in 74 counties

CRA counted 837 active adult-use retailer licenses in September 2026. CRA does not publish those stores by county. The best official county count comes from Treasury, which shares marijuana tax money with every county that hosts a store. Its report lists 860 retail stores and microbusinesses in 74 counties as of Sept. 30, 2025, plus 8 on tribal land. Wayne County led with 98, 61 of them in Detroit. Treasury’s count is a year older than CRA’s and counts stores differently, so the two totals don’t match.

Taxes on MI cannabis

Adult-use cannabis in Michigan now carries three state taxes. Shoppers pay the 10% excise tax and the 6% sales tax at the register. Since Jan. 1, 2026, a 24% wholesale tax has also applied when a grower or processor sells to a retailer, according to Treasury.

Taxes on adult-use cannabis (Treasury)
What Rate Notes
Adult-use excise tax 10% On retail sales. Treasury RAB 2026-3
State sales tax 6% On retail sales. Treasury RAB 2026-3
Wholesale marijuana tax 24% On the wholesale price, since Jan. 1, 2026. Treasury RAB 2026-3

The 10% excise tax pays for local governments, schools and roads. For fiscal 2025, Treasury sent $93.8M to cities, villages, townships, counties and tribes that host stores, or $54,017.10 for each licensed store or microbusiness. That was 30% of the fund. The rest went to K-12 schools and roads, 35% each.
