U.S. Legal Cannabis Market by the Numbers

The Stoner Review · U.S. Data HubLast updated November 1, 2026

The U.S. legal cannabis market, by the numbers. We add up the official figures behind every Stoner Review state data hub: sales, taxes, stores, patients and jobs, state by state. Every number links to the state regulator or tax agency that published it, and every total says what period it covers. We refresh it weekly as the state hubs update.

The legal market, added up

The quick read. These totals add up what each state’s own regulators and tax agencies publish, for the 21 adult-use states The Stoner Review tracks. We add figures together only when they cover the same period. Where a state reports a different period, we say so and keep it out of the like-for-like total.

$20.24Blegal cannabis sales in calendar 2025, 15 statesTSR sum of each state’s official 2025 figure; see the table below
$23.77Blegal sales, 18 states, latest yearly figure each publishesadds New York (Jan to Nov 2025); Washington (FY2025 (Jul 2024 to Jun 2025)); Nevada (FY2025 (Jul 2024 to Jun 2025)) to the 2025 total; periods differ
$17.16Bsales over each state’s latest 12 reported months, 12 statesTSR sum; end months differ by state
$1.82Bcannabis taxes in calendar 2025, 6 statesTSR sum; what each state counts as cannabis tax differs
7,909licensed retail locations, 18 statesTSR sum of each state’s own count; definitions and dates differ
419,071registered medical patients, 6 states that publish a countTSR sum; dates differ
How to read these totals. States measure sales differently. Michigan, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maine report adult-use sales only; most others include medical sales. Some states report estimated or taxable sales. Ohio’s 2025 figure covers the 52 weeks ending Dec. 27, 2025. No federal agency publishes a national count, so these are floors, not estimates of the whole market.

Sales by state

California is the biggest legal market, with $3.93B in 2025 sales. Michigan is second at $3.17B. Together, the 15 states with full calendar-2025 figures sold $20.24B of legal cannabis. Vermont and Rhode Island publish only part-year figures, and Alaska publishes tax rather than sales, so they are listed but not added in.
