Missouri charges a 6% state tax on adult-use cannabis and 4% on medical cannabis, according to DCR’s annual report. Medical tax money goes to the Veterans’ Health and Care Fund. Adult-use tax money goes to a reinvestment fund that pays for veterans’ services, the public defender system and substance-use treatment grants. Cities and counties can add their own tax.

DCR counted 118,892 active medical patient ID cards at the end of program year 2024 (Dec. 1, 2023, to Nov. 30, 2024). That’s down from more than 200,000 two years earlier, after adult-use sales began and ID cards moved to a three-year renewal.
