Amsterdam hash vs. New Jersey rosin traveler's comparison with the Santorini hoodie and Portugal Azulejo tee from the Travel collection — The Stoner Review

Amsterdam Hash vs. New Jersey Rosin: How the Two Compare for Traveling Smokers

Amsterdam’s coffeeshops still sell hash as a staple, while New Jersey’s legal dispensaries lean on live rosin, a solventless extract made from fresh-frozen plants. For smokers who have tried both, the two products differ in how they are made, how they are sold and what they cost. Neither one can travel: cannabis cannot legally cross a state line or an international border.

This guide compares the two using The Stoner Review’s own reporting and New Jersey’s official rules. It also includes a same-day price check of the concentrate shelf at AYR Dispensary in Eatontown, Monmouth County. The Stoner Review sells shirts and hoodies only. We do not sell or ship cannabis.

Amsterdam Hash: What Coffeeshops Sell

Hash remains central to the Amsterdam coffeeshop menu, according to our guide to the best Amsterdam coffeeshop hash strains. The guide lists traditional Moroccan pollen, pressed blocks, static dry-sift and newer hybrid hash from modern strains. It reported prices of about €8 to €25 a gram, depending on the shop and the type.

The same guide offers a simple rule of thumb: blond, soft hash for daytime and dark, hard hash for night. It also advises asking the budtender what is fresh. It notes that hash is often crumbled into a joint or pressed into a bowl. On rosin, the guide’s verdict was short. Hash still defines the coffeeshop, and rosin is “a treat when you find a clean jar.”

Dry-sift is the simplest method. Resin glands are shaken loose from dried plants through fine screens, then collected and often pressed. Our dry-sift explainer covers how it is made.

New Jersey Live Rosin: What Dispensaries Sell

Live rosin starts with plants frozen right after harvest. As our live rosin explainer describes it, the frozen material is stirred in ice water so the resin glands break off and sink. They are filtered through mesh screens into bubble hash. That hash is then pressed at low heat. No butane, CO2 or other solvents are used.

In other words, live rosin is a form of hash. It is pressed from ice water hash instead of being sold as a block. That is why New Jersey menus often say “hash rosin” or “solventless.”

Our ranking of the top New Jersey dabs of 2026 put Rosin King’s Blueberry Octane Cold Cure Live Rosin from Glass Meadows first. It listed premium New Jersey rosin at about $60 to $80 a gram and Full Tilt’s cold cure at about $50 to $70. Rythm’s Animal Face ranked third. For shops that stock solventless products, see our list of the best hash dispensaries in New Jersey.

Side by Side: Hash vs. Rosin

The table below sums up the main differences. Amsterdam details come from TSR’s published guides. New Jersey rules come from the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Prices are in different currencies and have not been converted.

Buying Rules: Amsterdam vs. New Jersey

In Amsterdam, buyers need valid photo ID and may buy up to 5 grams per shop, per transaction, according to our Amsterdam weed guide. Tobacco smoking is not allowed inside coffeeshops, and public smoking is banned in the historic center.

New Jersey sells to anyone 21 or older, residents and visitors alike, at licensed dispensaries, according to the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Each sale is capped at the equivalent of one ounce. For concentrates, that means up to 4 grams of solid concentrate or resin, or 4 grams of vape oil. Shoppers can mix categories, such as a half ounce of flower and 2 grams of concentrate.

Every New Jersey sale carries the state’s 6.625% sales tax plus a social equity excise fee of one-third of 1%, the CRC says. Adults may possess up to 6 ounces. Cannabis may be smoked in private spaces and anywhere cigarette smoking is allowed, unless posted otherwise. Landlords may ban it.

What Traveling Smokers Should Know

The most important rule is the same on both sides of the Atlantic. Cannabis bought legally cannot leave. The CRC says plainly that it is illegal to transport cannabis across state lines. Our Amsterdam hash guide gives the same answer for flights home: finish it before you fly.

For the trip itself, the Amsterdam guides offer practical advice. Ask what is fresh. Buy small amounts of two products instead of a lot of one. Skip shops built for tourists. Our Amsterdam strains guide covers flower, and our hotel-room hash etiquette guide covers smoking manners on the road.

The menu listed 13 one-gram rosin concentrates, all live rosin or solventless rosin badder. List prices ran from $60 to $70. Eleven showed a sale price, so the prices shown ranged from $42 to $70, with a median of $45. One-gram live resin, which is made with solvents, ran from $35 to $65.

Rythm’s Animal Face, third in our New Jersey dab ranking, was on the shelf at $70.00 with no sale. The menu did not list any traditional pressed hash. The closest item to Amsterdam-style pollen was loose kief from Sneaky Pete’s, at $27.20 on sale for 2 grams.

Some prices moved since TSR’s last visit. Kynd London Pound Cake eighths were $45.00 on Sept. 19 and Oct. 4. Today the menu showed $35.00 on sale, with the same $45.00 list price. Illicit Animal Star Cookies held at $50.00. Our Oct. 4 AYR Eatontown report has the earlier prices, and our review of 26 TSR menu checks shows how New Jersey shelves compare.
