Beginner LST Techniques for Dream OG (and First Grows)

Low Stress Training (LST) is one of the easiest and most effective ways to increase yields on your first grow. It gently bends and ties down branches to create a flat, even canopy. This allows better light penetration, more bud sites, and keeps tall sativa-leaning plants like Dream OG (Blue Dream × OG Kush) manageable in small tents.

Why LST for Dream OG? It has vigorous stretch in early flower. LST keeps height under control, promotes bushier growth, and can boost yields by 30–50% with almost no stress.

When to Start LST

  • Best Time: When the plant has 4–6 nodes (usually Week 3–4 of veg).
  • Continue through early flower (first 2–3 weeks of 12/12) until buds start forming heavily.
  • Stop once stems become woody (they snap easier).

Tools You Need (Cheap & Simple)

  • Soft plant ties, twist ties, or pipe cleaners
  • Small stakes or the tent frame itself
  • Scissors (for trimming ties)
  • Optional: Yoga mat or cardboard to protect the tent floor

Step-by-Step Beginner LST Technique

  1. Identify Main Stem & Branches Gently bend the main cola sideways toward the edge of the pot. Don’t force it — bend until you feel slight resistance.
  2. Tie It Down Secure the stem horizontally with soft ties. Anchor to the pot rim or tent frame. Leave a little slack so the plant can still grow.
  3. Repeat on Side Branches As new branches grow, bend them outward and down to fill the canopy evenly. Aim for a flat “sea of green” look.
  4. Maintain the Canopy Every few days, adjust ties as the plant grows. Tuck new growth under the canopy.
  5. Combine with Other Techniques (Optional for beginners)
    • Defoliate large fan leaves blocking lower buds (only a few at a time).
    • Top once (cut main tip) at 4–5 nodes if you want even more branches.

Weekly LST Checklist for Dream OG

  • Veg Week 3–4: First main stem bend
  • Veg Week 5–6: Tie side branches outward
  • Early Flower Week 1–2: Final adjustments + light defoliation
  • Check Daily: Ensure no ties are cutting into stems (loosen as needed)

Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Tying too tight → stems can bruise or snap.
  • Starting too late (after stretch begins) → harder to control height.
  • Ignoring airflow → crowded canopy can lead to mold/humidity issues.
  • Over-stressing the plant → LST is gentle; if branches snap, you’ve gone too far.

Expected Results with LST on Dream OG:

  • Shorter, bushier plant (easier to fit in a 2x2 or 3x3 tent)
  • More colas = bigger overall yield
  • Better light coverage = denser, frostier buds

LST is low-risk, high-reward, and perfect for your first grow. Once you master it, you can combine with SCROG (Screen of Green) on future runs.
