Cal-Mag Deficiency in Dream OG (and Cannabis in General): Identification, Causes & Fixes

Cal-Mag Deficiency in Dream OG (and Cannabis in General): Identification, Causes & Fixes

Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) deficiencies often appear together in cannabis grows — hence the popular “Cal-Mag” supplement. Dream OG (Blue Dream × OG Kush) is a relatively forgiving hybrid but can show issues in coco coir, RO water, or high-EC environments, especially during rapid growth or flowering. Early detection is key to protecting yields and bud quality.

Symptoms of Cal-Mag Deficiency

Calcium Deficiency (often affects new growth first):

  • Brown/bronze/rust-colored spots or dead patches on leaves.
  • Distorted or curled new growth (claw-like leaves).
  • Weak stems, poor root development.
  • In flower: Small or airy buds, reduced resin.

Magnesium Deficiency (usually hits older/lower leaves first):

  • Interveinal chlorosis — yellowing between the veins while veins stay green.
  • Leaf edges may curl upward or become crispy.
  • Purple/red stems or petioles in some cases.
  • Advanced: Leaves drop prematurely.

In Dream OG, you may notice symptoms mid-veg to early flower when the plant is pushing heavy growth and bud sites.

Common Causes

  • Coco coir or RO/distilled water: Naturally low in Ca/Mg.
  • pH imbalance: Calcium locks out above 6.8 (soil) or 6.2 (coco); Magnesium issues below 5.5–6.0.
  • High EC/salt buildup: Competing nutrients (excess K, N, or P) block uptake.
  • Rapid growth phases: Dream OG’s vigorous stretch demands more Ca/Mg.
  • Cold roots or poor drainage.

How to Fix It (Step-by-Step)

  1. Test pH & Runoff EC immediately.
  2. Flush (if overfed): Run 3x pot volume of pH’d water to clear salts.
  3. Supplement Cal-Mag:
    • Botanicare Cal-Mag or General Hydroponics CaliMagic: 1 tsp/gallon (start at ½ strength).
    • Foliar spray (diluted) for quick relief on new growth.
  4. Adjust ongoing schedule: Add Cal-Mag to every watering in coco/RO setups. In soil, use as needed.
  5. Monitor new growth: Healthy green growth in 5–7 days indicates recovery.

Prevention for Dream OG:

  • Use Cal-Mag proactively in coco or RO water (especially veg–mid flower).
  • Maintain stable pH and moderate EC.
  • Add dolomite lime to soil mixes for slow-release Ca/Mg.
  • Good airflow and temps (avoid cold roots).

Dream OG Specific Note: This hybrid’s dense bud structure in flower makes late-stage deficiencies costly (airy buds). Catch it early in veg for best results. Pair with your nutrient schedule — add extra Cal-Mag during heavy feeding weeks.

Cal-Mag issues are very common but highly fixable. Consistent monitoring beats chasing deficiencies.
