North Jersey Cannabis Culture Guide: Newark, Jersey City and Englishtown

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — North Jersey holds the state's densest cluster of legal cannabis stores. This page covers Jersey City, Newark and the Englishtown events our readers travel to, using the state's official records.

Hudson and Essex by the numbers

The NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission dispensary finder listed 35 adult-use dispensary locations in Hudson County on Oct. 5, 2026, the most of any county. Jersey City alone had 25, the most of any New Jersey municipality. Essex County had 28 locations. Newark, the state's largest city, had five. Full figures are on our NJ Cannabis Data Hub.

Englishtown

Englishtown is in Monmouth County, not North Jersey, but its Main Street has become a regular stop on our calendar. The state's finder listed four adult-use locations in the borough. Nightmare on Main Street runs there on Friday, Oct. 23. Details are in our October events calendar.

On the North Jersey calendar

  • Oct. 14: Weeding Out the Stoned game show, Newark, listed on Eventbrite.
  • Oct. 23: Nightmare on Main Street, Englishtown.

The rules

Adults 21 and older can buy from licensed New Jersey stores. Public consumption is barred by state law, and towns can add rules. Jersey City sits across the Hudson from Manhattan, but carrying cannabis across state lines remains a federal crime. Rules come from the CRC reports.
