NYC Cannabis Culture Guide: Brooklyn and Manhattan

NEW YORK — New York City now has more licensed cannabis stores than all of New Jersey. This guide covers Manhattan and Brooklyn with figures from New York's Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), and explains what the numbers mean for smokers on both sides of the river.

Manhattan and Brooklyn by the numbers

The NY Office of Cannabis Management dispensary verification page listed 729 adult-use dispensaries statewide on Oct. 5, 2026. By our county count of that list, Manhattan had 102 and Brooklyn had 92. Queens had 83, the Bronx 23 and Staten Island 14, for 314 across the five boroughs. New Jersey's state finder listed 327 locations for the entire state the same day.

OCM reported $512.6 million in retail sales for the third quarter of 2026 and $1.41 billion for the year through September. Sources and the full breakdown are on our NY Cannabis Data Hub.

NJ vs. NY: what the numbers mean for smokers

More stores usually means more choice and more price competition. New York's tax on adult-use retail sales totals 13% at the register, plus a distributor tax paid upstream, according to state tax rules. New Jersey charges its 6.625% sales tax, and towns may add a local transfer tax of up to 2% on retail sales. Store counts, sales and tax rates for both states sit side by side in NJ vs. NY cannabis by the numbers and on our NJ and NY data hubs. Carrying cannabis across state lines remains a federal crime.

Lemon Cherry Gelato and the NYC menu

Our Lemon Cherry Gelato NYC note looked at why the strain kept showing up on New York menus this year. Menus change week to week. Check a licensed store's own menu for current stock and prices.

Hall of Flowers at Pier 36, Oct. 21–22

Hall of Flowers, a trade show, runs at Pier 36, 299 South Street on the Lower East Side, on Oct. 21 and 22, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is limited to industry credential holders, according to the organizer's FAQ. Read our Hall of Flowers NYC streetwear and packing guide.

The rules in New York

Adults 21 and older can buy from licensed stores. New York law generally lets adults smoke cannabis where tobacco smoking is allowed, with exceptions. Buy only from stores on the OCM verification list. Rules come from the OCM.

What Brooklyn and Manhattan wear

Subway stairs, long walks and river wind call for a tee and a hoodie you can carry. The New York City Est. 1969 Gold Leaf Tee is $35 and counts toward Forever Summer's four for $100.
